(Visionary Brand business consultant, law of attraction enthusiast, and proud manifester of a mighty fine set of porch furniture)
Greetings to all you Onederous Ones of the Tribe!
As the Awakened Masters you are, in all aspects of your lives, I’m going to go ahead and assume that all your intentions are unfolding perfectly, interrupted only by your increasingly blissed-out states of gratitude as you contemplate the absolute perfection of your experience, the ludicrous abundance of your many delightful possessions.
In other words, your chakras are cleansed, your auras beautiful, your kharmic record clean as the proverbial whistle. The intuitive grace of your Yin is equaled only by the fierce determination of your Yang. Wherever you go, surely Goodness and Mercy not only follow you all of your days, but they show up ahead of time to make sure your favorite M&Ms are waiting on the pillow. In short, you are a vibrating vortex of perfectly aligned energy, and woe to all those who ever hinted otherwise.
“But Ellen, “ you say, “no doubt such things are absolutely true on the spiritual plane, but the fact is that in my actual day to day life. . . well, there’s actually quite a few things I want that don’t seem any closer to showing up. As a matter of fact I fully intended to be a beloved inspirational guru and ridiculously generous millionaire by now. But actually what is happening is that I hosted a workshop attended by three people and two of them were related to me. Also, my abundant wealth is currently evidenced by the $2.87 I’m keeping in a plastic cup.”
Actually, to be perfectly fair, I shouldn’t put that speech in your mouth, Onederous reader. To be perfectly honest, those details belong to my own experience of a couple of years back.
Let’s just say that I was one of those who, based entirely on one visit to Mile Hi Church and one viewing of The Secret, was so immediately sold on miracles, manifesting, and Law of Attraction that I was extremely, nay, pathologically Ready To Believe.
I was, in fact, the ideal candidate for a prompt conversion, seeing as at the time I had backed myself into such a grim and dismal corner that any improvement, even of the fantastical variety, was bound to be a big step up. At that point, I didn’t even own the plastic cup, much less the $2.87 in change.
Many of you, more savvy and sophisticated than I was in the ways of both the Universe and the people who inhabit it “consciously” (especially the beginners) will be able to predict more or less exactly what happened over the next couple of years.
All the situations in my life began to improve rapidly—but I mostly didn’t notice because I was too busy concentrating on the two or three things I just had to have and Couldn’t Live Without.
Never mind that I had actually lived without these things for a number of years without bodily harm. The point is, I didn’t know before this awakening that I had any hope whatsoever of ever having my luxury vehicle, ludicrously sexy boyfriend, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the boutiques, Botox, and nonprofits of my choice. Okay, maybe not the Botox. But sometimes I’m tempted.
Now that I was informed otherwise, I was damn well intent on having it all and having it quickly. So intent that I mostly neglected to do one or two very important things. The balance of these two things proved so very significant to my own eventual success as a Master Manifester (or Fester the Manifester, as my friend Toby calls me) that I wanted to share a bit of my technique with you.
Again, as you sophisticated Awakened Ones know, on the one hand, there’s nothing new under the sun—I doubt that in actual substance, my positive manifesting is any different than anyone else who plays with the delicate balance between desire and belief. Basically it’s all a matter of talking yourself into allowing More Good and Less Effort (which is a big deal for us Westerners, because after all, Effort is our cultural God. And a fine thing it is too, in small doses!)
And, on the other hand, as you also know, there’s always a new window from which to consider the view of the room. My own little window is a technique I call Delusional Realism. When it comes to ever-improving Law of Attraction success, it’s important to give equal air time to What Has Not Happened (that’s the “Delusional” part) and What Is Happening (the “Realism”). But for this second part, it helps to pay attention to “reality” in a very specific way.
First, in this post, let us consider the Delusion. As you all know, if you want to see some exciting changes in your life, you either need to A) visualize, imagine, affirm—somehow get yourself in a state of appreciating the future you want to see as if it is already occurring. Or B) just do your best not to be such a victim, or a jerk, or a vaguely psychotic narcissist, and carry on as if you actually do have some purpose in the world and some love for the planet. This can be difficult if you have extensive training in one of these modes (I myself am an expert and long-suffering martyr), but is always worth the effort.
In any event, for the first part of your manifesting equation, you’ll want to think, feel, talk, and act like something that is currently Not True is true. In other words, according to contemporary psychological conventions, you will be thinking, feeling, and acting in a delusional manner. When you first begin your visualizing or affirming or vision-boarding or quantum-leaping (whatever your preferred method), a large part of your brain and being will rebel. It usually looks something like this.
YOU: “I am now in perfect health, fitness, and beauty. My body is functioning perfectly in radiant harmony, I weigh 122 pounds, and I see myself moving effortlessly and attractively through my day.”
YOUR BRAIN: “Are you freakin’ kidding me? You weigh 122 all right, but those numbers in the exact reverse order. Also, your blood pressure and cholesterol level would suggest that perhaps you are not in, in fact, functioning ‘in radiant harmony.’”
Sound vaguely familiar? You dialogues with your brain/ego/mind/Bitchy Voice will have their own unique flavor, of course, but the nice thing about this stuff is just how predictable the Voice of Reason always is. Basically, as you go further and further out into The Delusional, fantasizing about all you want to experience, you can always count on the Voice of Reason to remind you that you are basically an annoying loser who will never amount to anything.
Fair enough. Find comfort in knowing that there is nary a human being alive who hasn’t gone through some considerable angst in the process of imagining and becoming something he or she currently isn’t. In this, you are not unique; you are not special. And in this context, that’s a damn good thing, because what others have healed and transformed, so can you.
You don’t have to spend all day long imagining and visualizing what isn’t yet in your life. I fantasize a lot, but generally only in bursts of 5 minutes here and there throughout the day. If you enjoy sitting down for 30 hardcore minutes of meditation/visualization of an outcome, by all means, be my guest. The trick is, you want to push yourself a little bit on this (once you begin you may discover—much to your surprise—that it’s been quite a long time since you used your imagination for anything intensely pleasurable), but not so much that you get all serious and “Trying Hard” to attract or manifest.
The question I always ask myself and my clients is this: “How much time are you spending enjoying what hasn’t happened yet?”
That’s the key. And of course, the exact amount of time doesn’t matter. What matters is that this question points your attention to where it needs to be: “How much of my life am I spending in enjoyment of what is coming? How much of my time am I enjoying where I am because I am also looking forward to where I’m going? How much am I enjoying and appreciating my own ability to direct my attention wherever I choose? How much am I loving myself for being the kind of person who can transform any condition or circumstance through my friendly focus on an improved future?”
Try any of those questions on for size and see what comes up for you. Please feel free to contact me on email, Facebook, or Twitter if you have any questions, observations, or complaints!
Take some time to embrace and experiment with the Delusional with a Wonder and Curiosity you may have left behind a few years back. But no matter. Your buddies Wonder and Curiosity are always waiting shyly in the corner, hoping you will come out to play.
