6 Tips for What to Do When You Have a Few Minutes to Speak About Your Business

Written by Felicia Slattery

Business Inspiration | Public SpeakingPublic speaking provides a powerful way for you to market your business in a variety of contexts. Often, you may find yourself at a networking meeting or other occasion where you’ll be invited to speak for just a brief period about your business. Only a few minutes isn’t enough time to deliver a full-length “Signature Speech” (that’s a 30-60 minute speech filled with useful information for your audience so you can market your business), but you can give people an accurate sense of what you do while boosting your credibility and potentially attracting new prospects.

Here are my tips for when you have just a few minutes to talk about your business:

  1. Start with your purpose. What do you want to get out of the event? Are you hoping to get people to sign up to receive a free report and therefore join your mailing list? Do you want to sell an e-book? Be specific about what you hope to get as a direct result of your speech.
  2. Consider the purpose of the audience. Why is that audience gathered? Think about who those folks are and why they have selected to attend that event and what they hope to gain from listening to you speak. Be sure to give them what they have been promised they will hear. One clue can be to look at the context of the event to determine what your audience hopes to gain.
  3. Consider your area of expertise. In your business what have you helped your clients with that has produced spectacular results for them? Talk about that.
  4. Consider your PASSION. This is huge. Speak to the audience about something you are passionate about. When you do so your audience will be drawn to you and will want to listen. We are inspired by passion, and that includes listening to others who are passionate about what they do.
  5. Make it interactive. Do this by asking questions. I prefer to have interaction throughout my presentations to continue to draw the audience in.
  6. Always provide a few steps, tips, or techniques that your audience members can use in their lives right away. You want people to feel they have come away from your talk with great value. Providing helpful information will help you achieve that goal– even if you only have just a few minutes to speak.

Remember your job in the few minutes you have to speak is to build your credibility and attract your ideal clients and prospects. When you do, you’ll soon see the power even just a few minutes has when you are marketing your business with public speaking.

Public speaking is one important way to increase your credibility as a small or home-based business owner. I invite you to discover how to Increase Business by Communicating Your Credibility now. Marketing 101: Let People Know What You Have to Offer

Written by Ruth Hegarty

Marketing is THE key ingredient to your business success. No matter how good you are at what you do, if nobody knows you are out there doing it, they can’t hire you. So marketing is the number one activity you can engage in to benefit your business regardless of what business you’re actually in. Think of it like this: you’re not a graphic designer; you’re a marketer of graphic design services. In a very real way, marketing is your business. There is no higher leverage activity in which you can engage. Why is marketing so important? It’s simple. It doesn’t matter how good you are at what you do if nobody can hire you because they don’t know you exist. That means you don’t make money, you don’t get to engage in the work you are passionate about and you don’t get to help people through that work unless you market your business.

Business Inspiration | Marketing 101

What can you do this week to let people know about your business?

Here are 11 tips to get you started:

1. Take a look at what you are already dong to market your business. What’s working? What isn’t?
2. Who is in your target market? Make a list of places where you can expose them to your message?
3. Do you have a market plan? If not, you need one!
4. Is your marketing message consistent? Don’t confuse your market with conflicting messages. Keep your language, message frequency, USP (unique selling proposition), etc. consistent
5. Don’t give up too soon. Often it times some time for your message to gain traction. Pick a couple of marketing techniques and stick with them for a while before assessing their success.
6. Are you utilizing social media to your advantage? Are you on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
7. What steps in your marketing plan can you automate so they happen consistently and save you time and effort.
8. Be honest in all your messages. Don’t make claims you and your business can’t live up to.
9. Stress the benefits of your service more than the features
10. Show your personality and have fun with your marketing.
11. Don’t use marketing techniques you think you should use solely because they work for others. Use the methods that really fit your style and personality to get the best results.

Remember that marketing is meant to be an ongoing process. Even when you have all the business you can handle, you still want to be marketing. It’s OK to have a waiting list of people who want to work with you. In fact, it’s great as you’ll never have to worry where your next client is coming from and there’s never a dull moment.

Pick 3-5 items from the list above to work on this week or come up with your own ideas. The secret to success is consistent results oriented joyful action.

As always, have fun with this process.

Get The Right Answers When You Ask The Right Questions

As a huge fan of self-reflection in general and having seen the evidence of it’s impact on success many times in working with clients (and myself) the only real question becomes: what questions do you ask yourself that have the power to elicit the answers that are vital for you to manifest your dreams. Today, I’m sharing 15 of my favorites with you. An important part of your coach’s job is to ask the right questions. We train for years to know which ones are the right ones as from the thousands of questions your coach can ask you, there is always one perfect one for each client conversation. Knowing that question is both an art and a science. Since this article is something of a one-sided conversation, the following questions are by necessity somewhat general, still, one will be the right question for you in the moments that you are reading it.

Take a few moments to think about your business in general or a specific aspect of your business that you want clarity on today. Read the following questions out loud slowly and notice how you respond to each one emotionally. One or two questions will truly resonate with you in the moment and you will feel within yourself as you read that question that it holds an important answer for you. Don’t force the answers. Simply ask yourself the question or questions that your intuition responded to throughout the day and the answer will reveal itself.

Inspired Action | Asking the Right Questions

1. Why am I in this business?
2. What is the biggest dream I can dream?
3. Who does and does not support my dreams?
4. How can I attract even more abundance in my life?
5. What is great about me? (and don’t you dare say “nothing”!)
6. What thoughts do I have that empower me?
7. What is going right in my life?
8. How much well-being can I allow into my life? What will that look like?
9. What will make me feel good in this moment?
10. What is the most effortless way to get this done?
11. Who can help me with this project?
12. What choice feels best in this situation?
13. What thought right now will make me feel good about being me today?
14. What are the top 3 things I can let go of in my daily routine that would allow me to focus on income-producing activities instead?
15. What are the 3 biggest things I know I could do to increase my contribution and value?

Use these questions to motivate and empower yourself to live the life of your dreams.

And, of course, have fun with this.
