Your Elevator Speech in 5 Simple Steps | Business Inspiration

Last week I had a meeting with a very well-known motivational speaker. I had met him before at a seminar and interviewed him over the phone for a book, so I felt somewhat comfortable. While on the phone interview, I told him I wanted to write for him. He was surprisingly very open to it. As an idea guy, he was bursting with brilliance but short on staff. We discussed possibilities and soon I was set up with a project. Once I finished, I knew there were many others sitting in his office waiting to be sold. But he was so busy I couldn’t connect with him. So, I planned a shopping day near his office (an hour away from me) and asked if I could drop by. Fortunately, his schedule had an opening!

He had lunch ready for us in a conference room where we could chat. After showing me around, he asked me to deliver my 30 second “elevator speech.” You know, how you would explain what you do to a stranger in 30 seconds or less.

I didn’t have one.

If you think my hair is red, you should have seen my entire face and neck. I turned a noticeably deep shade of scarlet. He looked dumbfounded. Fortunately, he was able to glean enough of what he needed through our conversation to figure out how I sell myself (obviously, not very well that day). I learned my lesson. I went home and wrote my elevator speech that night. I suggest you do the same. See my instructions below.

YOUR ELEVATOR SPEECH – STEP-BY-STEP

An “elevator speech” is a short synopsis of your business that can potentially get you clients. It shouldn’t take any longer to deliver than the time you would spend going between floors in an elevator – roughly 30 seconds. If you have an enticing opening, people often want to know more. Then you reel ‘em in.

When crafting your elevator speech, remember to include the “what’s in it for me” factor. They don’t really care what you do. They want to know what’s in it for them. How can you help them?

  1. Identify your target market at the beginning of your speech. Don’t be afraid to be narrow. Having a niche is preferable, as you probably already know. Everyone can’t be your client.
  2. Identify the problem you solve for your target market. This should provoke curiosity. “I help widget manufacturers who have a hard time increasing their sales.”
  3. Expound on how you solve that problem. What techniques do you use? What are some examples of your results for other clients? Know statistics about trends in their industry if possible.
  4. Separate yourself out from the pack. Why is your company different than the others? Why should they hire you?
  5. Practice, practice, practice saying it until it sounds natural. Otherwise you’ll SOUND like you’re selling and turn off the listener immediately.

Here’s mine. You’re welcome to use it as a template, but please don’t copy it word for word. It would be embarrassing to have my speech delivered back to me one day (though I would respect you for having one at all!)

“I work with entrepreneurs who are having trouble increasing their sales. So I woo their customers into buying by using persuasive language – I’m a copywriter. Since sales are all about relationships, I write copy that builds trust and loyalty to my clients by using the right words. I start by learning all about their business and competition. Then I don’t waste anybody’s time because, I know going in what works and what doesn’t. There are certain techniques and psychological factors that can dramatically increase sales. I know them.”

Inspired Action | Remodeling Your Thoughts to Create The Life You Deserve

Do you ever get the feeling that you are stuck in a rut and can’t seem to get out, no matter how hard you try? Many people feel this from time to time. This isn’t necessarily a bad situation if you use it properly. When you get that stuck in a rut feeling, that is your Source self letting you know that it is time to expand and mix things up a little bit. That feeling, while it isn’t pleasant, can be a gift, if you allow it to be. It is providing contrast. It is giving you an opportunity to make a further discernment in regards to what you do and do not want.  Remodeling Your Thoughts

You can think of your life like a house. You look at the house and realize there are many things you like about it. Perhaps it has a great kitchen, or a fabulous master suite. Perhaps you love the dining room, or the family room is the perfect cozy retreat. But perhaps there are also parts of the house that are currently displeasing to you. Are the floors  tile or carpet and you currently like hard wood floors? Perhaps the basement is cold and dark and is not fulfilling its potential for being a finished living space for you and your family to enjoy. So you look at what you like and don’t like, and realize you have the resources to make the desired changes. Do you beat yourself up, making yourself feel bad because there is tile instead of hardwood floors in your kitchen? Do you take yourself to task because the basement isn’t finished? Do you focus on these shortcomings and never do anything about them? No, of course you don’t. You simply make a plan to remodel. You may look for a contractor, or other expert to help you make the desired changes. If you continue to take appropriate action, you eventually create the home of your dreams.

Your life is more important than your house, and yet you may very well focus more positive attention on your house than your life. So why not take what works for your house and apply it to your life? Your life is the direct result of the patterns of your thoughts. So if you want to improve the conditions of your life, you must remodel your pattern of thought. What would happen if you looked at your thoughts like your house?

You might decide that you love your family and friends. You might realize that you enjoy the work that you do, but dislike the long commute. Look at your life honestly and consider the thoughts that have created your current circumstances. Don’t beat yourself up over the thoughts you have used to create your current circumstance. Just identify the things that you wish to improve and remodel your thought patterns. You may also wish to look for a counselor or other expert to help you make your desired changes.

So here is a plan to help you remodel your pattern of thought.

Step One: Take out a pen and a sheet of paper and take stock of your life. Make a list of the things that you like about your life. Then write out the reasons you like these things in your life. These are your effective thought patterns. They are effective because they have attracted the things you desire.

Step Two: Make a list of things you would like to improve in your life. Take care to not judge yourself or your circumstances in this situation.

Step Three: Make a list of the thoughts you have been thinking about the things you are unhappy with. It is important to be honest here. What have you been saying to yourself about these things? Identifying this is a crucial step. You need to be aware of where your attention is focused in regard to these things.

Step Four: Take a moment to thank each and every one of these thoughts for providing you with clarity about what you do not want. Share your appreciation for them and what their role has been. Then dismiss them, thanking them for a job well done.

Step Five: Look at your list of every thing you are unhappy about. Take a separate sheet of paper and write a description of what changes you want to make. What do those changes look like? What do the improved circumstances feel like? In your mind, walk in to your new circumstances like you would walk into a newly remodeled home. Describe that experience on paper.

Step Six: Read that description every morning as soon as you wake up. Read that description every night before you go to sleep. Keep copies of that description handy. If you find yourself revisiting in your thoughts the things you do not want, thank them again for providing clarity, and then refocus on your description of what you do want.

If you consistently follow these simple steps, you will find that those negative thoughts of lack or what you do not want will not visit as often and will not stay as long as they have in the past. The negative thoughts have learned that their true role is to provide contrast and clarity. They understand that their role is fleeting. You understand that too!

Congratulations! You have just remodeled your thought patterns! You will find that your environment and circumstances will be remodeled as well. You can now enjoy life more as you have mastered the mystery of deliberate manifestation.
