Harnessing the Firepower of Bullets | Creative Inspiration

By Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero

Bullets are the little typographical symbols that signify a list is coming. They show items of equal importance but listed on separate lines. The reader sees them as little mini bits of knowledge that help them make their decision about buying from you.

These are extremely powerful in copy. Often these little guys make or break your sale. They are very quick to read and can explode on impact, creating an emotional response more effectively in many cases than a longer paragraph. But do you know the rules of punctuating bullets?

Proper Punctuation of Bullets Revealed

Copy isn’t bound by the strict  rules your English teacher from grammar school forced you to follow. Nevertheless, you should know the rules before you break or bend them. Consistency keeps the flow going. So be aware of these rules of style to keep you on track.

1) If the list items are complete sentences, go ahead and treat them as such. You’d start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark.

Example:
• This is a complete sentence.
• Don’t forget to capitalize the first word.
• Remember to add a period at the end.

2) Got an incomplete sentence on your hands? No problem. Here are two different accepted methods of attack.

Example 1:
• You don’t even have to capitalize the first letter;
• but end with a comma OR a semi-colon;
• again, consistency is key;
• the second to last line ends with “and;”
• the last item has a period.

Example 2:
Start the introductory sentence with a dash or a colon or my favorite…the ellipsis point (the trailing off of a thought or a significant pause)…
• This is my favorite brand of bullets
• Always start with a capital letter
• No end punctuation in sight

Make Your Bullets Work Harder

These benign looking little dots can pack a powerful wallop in the sales arena. But do you know how to make them even more effective? Allow me to demonstrate:

• Always aim for a minimum list of 5 or more bullets. (Odd numbers are more effective than even numbers.)
• It’s okay to have more than one set of bullets reinforcing some of the same facts.
• Add every feature and benefit in here.
• Strategically bold or italicize keyword phrases so scanners can still get the gist of what you’re selling without having to read every word of copy on the first pass.
• Alternate what are called “blind bullets” with hard facts. A blind bullet is a teaser that whets your appetite, but can use without ever having to get your product.

Examples:
o What should NEVER be on your webpage – yet 88% of websites ignore it. (blind bullet)
o Nearly twice as many women (12%) as men (7%) are affected by a depressive illness or overwhelm from life each year. (hard fact)
• Add the page number in parenthesis where the reader can find the information (example: see page 96).

Bullet Templates You Can Steal

Ever get hung up writing your own bullets? Me too. So keep these templates handy for your swipe file.
• One mistake _____ make is….
• How to _____________…
• The truth behind __________________.
• Do _________________ effortlessly and easily.
• Has a proven track record so that _______.

The way you word your bullets can psychologically move your prospect toward the sale. They help him or her overcome internal objections they may not even be aware of. Plus they add a graphical element to your copy, making it breezier to read through.

Metaphysics: Understanding The World

Metaphysics: Understanding The World

Divine Inspiration | Metaphysics: Understanding the WorldBy Lexi L Davis

Have you heard the word “metaphysics” being tossed around in conversation but are not quite sure what it means? Do you have a vague understanding of this philosophical concept but are intrigued and want to know more? Metaphysics is both a highly complicated and highly simple idea. The more you learn about it, the more you realize how much more there is to learn! If you want to broaden your mind and impress your friends in the process, read on for more information on the fascinating idea of metaphysics.

First, it is important to realize that “metaphysics” is a word which is extremely difficult to define. It has been described in countless different ways by philosophers throughout the ages. For practical purposes, however, metaphysics can be defined as that branch of philosophy which deals with the fundamental or basic nature of all things. Those who study metaphysics attempt to understand why the world is the way that it is.

It is also important to understand that popular culture commonly misuses the term “metaphysical” to mean “that which is not physical,” as in “metaphysical question” or “metaphysical being.” However, this is extremely misleading. Although metaphysics is an explanation of that which goes beyond our physical understanding of the world, it is not intended to be separate from the world’s basic physical nature. In other words, metaphysics is not the opposite of physics, but rather an extension of it.

Metaphysics is often written off by “serious” students of more concrete disciplines such as the physical and mathematical sciences. The reason for this is obvious: since metaphysics is difficult to describe concretely, clearly, or with fact and pure of speculation, it is easy to dismiss as “unscientific.” It is unfortunate that this stereotype exists, because it has surely cost the field plenty of bright, promising students who have devoted their studies to other interests instead.

If you want to learn more about the nearly limitless concepts of metaphysics, or just want to try answering life’s difficult questions for yourself, there is plenty of reading material out there for you. Many scholars start with Aristotle’s writings, but Immanuel’s Kant’s work is another great option. It is quite difficult to read their thoughts without background knowledge, clarification and addition context, however, so you might consider investing in a few study guides or history books to help you get started. No matter how you chose to begin, your tiny spark of interest in metaphysics is sure to grow into a burning lifelong desire to know more.

Lexi Davis is a writer who enjoys writing on a number of different verticals. For more on metaphysics, Eden Journal offers readers information on the various shades of metaphysics.

Inspired Action | Being a Charismatic Adult in the Life of a Child

Studies show that the #1 factor in creating resiliency in children is that they have at least one “charismatic adult” somewhere in their life.  This is so important!  Kids need to have an adult in their corner!  They need to have someone that they encounter in their life that gives them the message that they have value, they need to have someone in their life who believes in them, and communicates that to them.

Inspired into action…

What does it mean to be a “charismatic adult”?   Being a Charismatic Adult

According to Wikipedia, charisma is a rare personality trait usually encompassing leadership abilities, eloquence, charm, and persuasiveness.

But being a charismatic adult in the eyes of a child is actually very simple!  Think back to when you were a kid.  Probably everyone reading this has at least one adult they remember from their childhood that they know made a difference to them.  What qualities did that person possess?  What did that person say to you?  Do with you?  Teach you?  How did they treat you?  How did they make you feel?  Believe it or not, many kids don’t have a single person in their lives that make them feel like that!  But, YOU could be that person!

The interesting thing about the studies is that they found out that virtually any adult the child may encounter in their daily dealings can be that one charismatic adult!  In other words, the charimatic adult in the child’s life may not even be someone that spends a lot of time with them.  The studies showed that sometimes, even one chance encounter with the right adult could mean the difference for the child!  What this means for us, as adults, is that we can potentially have a dramatic impact in the life of a child, even in what may seem to be the most casual or insignificant encounter with them!  That also means that it is important for us, as adults, to keep a few things in mind, as we go about our day to day lives.

You may not ever even realize when a chance encounter with a child has a potential to change that child’s life forever, but if you treat all the children you encounter with respect and keep in mind the tips below, I can guarantee that at least one encounter you have with a child WILL change that child’s life for the better, and forever!

Charismatic Adults Know:

  1. Kids are smart and there are multiple intelligences
  2. As a society, we NEED diversity and differences
  3. Normalcy is a myth
  4. Behavior is communication; behavior is a language
  5. Laziness is a myth
  6. Nobody can predict capacity
  7. Basic needs have to be addressed before all else
  • To feel they belong
  • To feel autonomous
  • To feel competent

Charismatic Adults:

  1. Are empathic
  2. Avoid labeling
  3. Help kids to reframe deficits as gifts
  4. Help kids create an asset-based identity
  5. Give kids the message “you’re not broken!”
  6. Remove anger and use benign indifference
  7. Treat children with respect and don’t condescend
  8. Meet kids where they are/at their level
  9. SEE the value in the child
  10. When things aren’t working, ask yourself “What can I do differently?”
  11. Get feedback, ask and really listen

What YOU can do to Empower a Child:

  1. Be a witness to the child’s gifts and talents!
  2. Create an environment for kids that doesn’t hurt!
  3. Refocus and redefine what success is!
  4. Know that EVERY child needs to feel special and valued!
  5. Advocate and teach advocacy! Speak up for them and teach them to speak up for themselves!
  6. Recognize resiliency and value diversity!
  7. Respect, Encourage, Love, Care!
  8. Value and validate – recognize, verbalize, show you know it!
